Get Down to Brass Tacks
In the early nineteenth century, British prisoners slept in hammocks because they could be rolled up during the day, giving the inmates more room in their cells. That plan was abandoned when the prisoners pulled out the brass hooks that held the hammocks to the wall and used them as weapons against the guards. So much for good behavior!
Go Ahead, Take a Load Off
That couch is calling you. You can’t resist the urge to just throw yourself on it and relax after the day’s events. It’s always there for you when you want to just do … nothing, really. It’s a perfect way to unwind, and when it’s time to get up off the couch, it’s never easy. Why all the trouble?
The first thing that draws your attention to a particular couch isn’t what it feels like but what it looks like. The look of a couch won’t help you be comfortable when you’re in it, at which point you may not be doing your back any favors. The doctorial team at www.a2zbackpain.com identified several positions that can cause back problems down the road, which include a low seat and short backrest. You don’t have to go all militaristic when you sit on the couch, but your back is in the best position if you have both feet on the floor and your lower back is snug against the backrest.
It’s not just back pain that can doom you on the couch. If lying down is your cup of tea and you like to rest your head on the armrest, then get up! It’s called an armrest for a reason! Nav Gill, a Connecticut-based chiropractor, advises not to rest (or sleep!) in this position unless you use cushions to support your neck and alter your position often to balance out the strain on your neck.
The couch may be calling you, but it’s sure not calling you to be comfortable.
